Craftsmanship

Our Mission

The production of a single pen is a great collaborative effort. The delicate parts that combine to create just one of our writing instruments are made by local men and women in Gunma, Japan who are dedicated to their craft. Though little known, Gunma has a long history of craftsmanship that goes back to Word War II. After the war, the manufacturers in the region who previously made military equipment had to adapt their skills to the manufacture of commercial products. It is our mission, in our designs and through our collaboration with these local craftsmen, to express the spirit and history of Gunma and to share it with the world. We are also intrigued by our countrymen’s passion for color, which led us to partner with Kuretake, Ltd. in Nara to develop our signature fragrant inks. We are always on the lookout for new opportunities for collaboration and to expand our ever-growing community.

Dedication to the Perfect Nib

Japanese characters, called kanji, can be intricate and difficult to write, which is why we developed the KATANA. Its specially designed nib can draw the finest line perfect for writing kanji or for those with smaller handwriting. Our fountain pens require only the slightest downward pressure to write, allowing the holder to write with the fluidity of a calligraphy brush. In addition to Mitasanshodo originals, we have developed pens in collaboration with Pilot, Sailor, and Platinum.

Fragrant Ink for a Sensuous Writing Experience

Mitasanshodo partners with Kuretake, Ltd. in developing its signature Sumi and Hana inks. “Sumi” is a traditional Japanese ink used for calligraphy and art and known for its jet black color. Though true sumi is pigmented and not suited to fountain pens, we developed a dye-based ink with the qualities of sumi while adding subtle scents to offer a more sensuous writing experience. With a lineup of 9 original colors, there’s sure to be an ink for every occasion.

Our Signature Ink Bottles

Our glass bottles were designed by President Mita Hidehiko himself, and are made in none other than Tokyo’s Shitamachi, home to Japan’s best glassmakers. Though they were meant simply as containers for our Sumi and Hana inks, we began selling these bottles on their own at the request of our patrons. We also began to offer the option of a brass cap for a touch of added elegance. Like a fine wine, the brass ages with time, allowing the owner to enjoy its subtle changes in color.

About Mitasanshodo

Mitasanshodo was founded in 1928 by Takeshi Mita in Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture. The company originally made personal seals which are used in lieu of signatures in Japan. Constantly evolving with the times, the company expanded its product line to include paper, brushes and office implements.

Hidehiko Mita, Mitasanshodo’s third president, has once again revamped the company for the age of the internet. Under his leadership, Mitasanshodo now produces premium writing implements and other stationery on a small scale, with a focus on quality and design. The company has steadily grown a strong base of dedicated fans in Japan and is now ready to expand overseas, starting with our English-language company website.

Daiki Mita, in line to be the fourth company president, is currently undergoing training at another company and looking forward to celebrate Mitasanshodo’s 100th anniversary with his father Hidehiko.
